Privacy Policy

At the Communications Governance Observatory, we’re committed to respecting your privacy. The purpose of this privacy policy is to inform visitors to our site and those who may engage with the Communications Governance Observatory about how their data or personal information may be used.

We may change this Policy as new features are added to the website. By using our website, you’re agreeing to this policy. The Communications Governance Observatory operates under McMaster University; where this policy does not specify, the policies under McMaster’s Privacy Office (University Secretariat) take precedence. McMaster Humanities IT is responsible for security of the CGO website and McMaster University Technology Services (UTS) services our listserv.

The Communication Governance Observatory generally does not collect personal data from those who visit our website or interact with the Observatory. However, we facilitate and/or host events such as conferences or talks, where we may collect personal information you provide us such as name, email, or academic institution for the purpose of preparing, planning, and executing those events. In these instances, personal information may be collected for registration and communication purposes.

Website

Our website primarily serves to share non-personal information, news, and other content. The Communications Governance Observatory does not use cookies or collect your personal data when you visit our website. The website is hosted by WordPress, and subject to its privacy policy, as well as relevant third parties of the service providers they may use.

Embedded content from other websites

Our newsletter provides our visitors with links to other websites from articles in the newsletter or other embedded content on the site (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website, where they may collect data about you, including the use of cookies.

Mailing List

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address and name through our listserv hosted on McMaster MAILMAN . This information is primarily used for the purpose of distributing the newsletter each week. We may occasionally review information from the subscription list to better understand our audience.

We use your email address to provide you with weekly updates through our newsletter subscription. When you subscribe, you simply send an email (from the address you wish to subscribe with) to ncgl-news-l-join@mcmaster.ca . The subject and body are ignored, and therefore do not collect any personal information entered.

From time to time, we use personal information for the purposes of facilitating and hosting events such as conferences or talks. In these instances, personal information may be collected for registration and communication purposes.

We do not use information we collect through our web site and listserv for research purposes or data analysis.

We do not share any personal information that identifies you with any third parties beyond service providers identified in this policy, and except when required by law.

We only collect and use data in which we have your consent to use for the aforementioned purposes. At any time, you can cancel your newsletter subscription and/or you can request that we delete any personal information collected from you provided the information. That being said, if that information is needed to carry out services, such as registration for an event, deletion of that information may impede our ability to do so.

At any time, you may contact Sara Bannerman if any information you have provided to us needs to be corrected or updated in order to fulfil a service or partnership with CGO.
